乌龙寺住持圆慧以及珍贵的《九阴真经》无故失踪，之后，圆慧的胞弟紫微真人（王华 饰）成为了当朝国师。小和尚开心（曹骏 饰）被调至乌龙寺担当住持，阴差阳错之下认了平日里四处招惹是非的小混混百搭（陈天文 饰）做他的师叔，两人捣鼓出的动静常常将寺中掌管戒律的铁空气得半死。 当今皇帝昏庸无能，手握大权的紫微真人企图谋权篡位，深受其害的皇后为了终结国师的阴谋，秘密派出宫女梅香去乌龙寺找开心，寻求他的帮助。然而，当开心抵达京城之时，紫薇真人早已得势，一手遮天，而单纯善良的开心则在无意之中中了国师的奸计，身负重伤。。Disarmingly realistic in its depiction of the realities of frontier life, Heartland is a strong antidote to the cliches of traditional Westerns. This semi-documentary slice of life is based on the diaries of Elmore Randall Stewart about her days on the Wyoming frontier in the early 20th century. It's a strongly feminist statement about a woman raising her small daughter alone and scrapping for a living by working for a shy Scottish rancher. Director Richard Pearce brings an endearing touch to a film that is helped greatly by the dazzling cinematography of Fred Murphy. Conchata Ferrell and Rip Torn star in this small film that substitutes veracity for a high-powered plot. Pearce worked as a cinematographer on Woodstock and other documentaries before making his directorial debut. Winner of the 1980 Berlin Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival。
