1934年，经济大萧条越来越严重，10岁的女孩Kit的家庭也遭到连累，父亲前往芝加哥寻找工作，为了维持生计，母亲把房子的空余房间出租，各色各样的住客搬了进来。包括流动图书馆的馆长Miss Bond、健美操小姐Miss Dooley、魔术师、还有Kit的同学Stirling以及他母亲，无业游民Will和弟弟Countee在此打工，做些修补工作以换取食物。Kit的志愿是当一名伟大的新闻记者，当她了解新闻是需要新鲜的题材，便随时挖掘新鲜事件。当地一直发生游民抢劫的恶性案件，这次轮到Kit的好友Ruthie家被抢，继而是Kit家的保险箱而被偷走了，所有的矛头都指向了Will，只有Kit相信他是无辜的。一个偶然的机会下，Kit和她的小伙伴们发现了真凶，并且打算用计谋擒住对方。他们能在感恩节到来之前让生活回复正常吗？。Somewhere in Berlin.
